A Moving Mission

The Global Migration Lab at the Australian Red Cross has a seemingly simple mission that can be hard to explain in practice.

We collaborated extensively to simplify complex and detailed issues down into bite-size, accessible nuggets of information that someone with little knowledge of the organisation could understand. Visuals gave wider context to what the voiceover was saying, explaining, and giving more detail.

”We're still playing the video far and wide and it is hugely helpful to have it on hand as a way to explain our work.’
Sanushka Mudaliar, Director at Global Migration Lab

Sensitive Subjects

Stereotypes of migrants are pervasive, whether accurate or not. This lead to a conundrum, how we can have a ‘human focused’ animation, while avoiding referencing people’s race, nationality or religion?

The creative solution was to use a ‘paper cut out’ illustration style, that allowed enough detail to show relationships and ages, but not tying the characters to any specific region or group. We could easily change body colours to reference Red Cross workers in red.

Crucially, the final scene shows these figures turning into ‘real’ people, reminding the viewer that the people discussed in the video are not just meaningless statistics, but real humans.
