Sci-fi meets the Wiggles

I was introduced to this TVC in post-production. 3D animation takes a lot longer than 2D, and while the medical graphics are a large part of this advert, we were able to insert them towards the end.

With a clear vision from the existing animation work, we had to work out how to present serious-looking medical data in a way that matched the fun and friendly style of the blue-circle characters and scenes.

To do this I used simplified geometric shapes where possible, often with rounded edges giving a slightly childlike feel to balance out the more technical-looking data. The brand colours were also lightened (referencing the way a monitor lights up) furthering the light and friendly appearance.

Accurately Inaccurate

Presenting medical data on national TV is rife with risks. It needed to be very clear that this data wasn’t referencing ‘real’ data, and was merely for illustrative purposes only. We didn’t want viewers basing their health choices on 2 seconds of fake medical motion graphics inside a fictional character’s gut!

Disclaimers would do some of the work, but everything was kept purposely vague; wording was removed where possible, most of the diagrams referenced the ‘look’ of statistical data without being specific to what it was for. The sci-fi style font helped lend an air of authority to the diagrams, so they didn’t look completely made up.
