Words into Pictures

This project started with a voiceover and free reign to explore conceptual approaches and illustration style. What was the best way to show the transformative nature of reading visually?

I took the literal approach, to stories being literally being created in (or on) your head as your read. The protagonist’s hair became a choppy sea as well as an eerie fog. This approach made for a whimsical and creative execution that mirrored the ‘other world’ feeling we get when we read.

The role of Colour

With such a fast-moving voiceover and visually rich animation, how do we ensure the viewer keeps focus on the right section?

Experienced animators know that viewers will generally focus on anything that’s moving. But colour too, is essential. By utilising a limited colour palette (muted primary colours) the striking hair colour of the protagonist means the viewer knows who to follow throughout.

A pop of yellow every now and then avoided repetivie scenes, as well as subtle pop-culture references to the X-Files, Jaws and Florence and Machine.
